I met with 9-12-year-olds in 4-H to help them prepare for public speaking which got me thinking about the people who made a difference in my life. I have been fortunate to have many people who shared their knowledge and skill with me and encouraged me to reach my full potential.  Of course, my parents were at the core of my development, giving me a solid foundation from which to grow.

I had a ballet teacher who saw my dancing potential at the age of 3, developed my skills and built my confidence, so I was able to attend the National Ballet School when I was nine. She pushed me to do my best always —  even when I was tired and hurting. I found out that I could dig deep to give a bit more. Then I had a board member who was like a second father to me. I was 23 when I started as an executive director and needed support, guidance, and lots of encouragement. The phrase “ignorance is bliss” comes to mind. He was in my corner every step of the way. Although he was a farmer and didn’t have the skill related to my job, his wisdom and caring nature helped build my resolve and a sense of purpose. Thirdly, I had a mentor who helped me find the courage to reinvent myself and discover talents I didn’t know I had as a consultant and educator. She gave so much of herself to ensure my success. She was a sounding board, a problem-solver, a consultant and a friend.

Looking back, each mentor gave me what I needed most at the time and so much more — confidence, purpose, resolve, and courage. They focused their energy on who I was and who I wanted to be, not on what they wanted me to be. They pushed, encouraged and believed I would succeed. Their faith had me wishing to exceed their expectations.

I am now at a place of giving back and started mentoring a Gen Y. I am taking everything I learned from them and paying it forward. We have formed a business partnership as family business advisors, focusing on supporting family farms to transition their operation to the next generation. I enjoy the opportunity to share what I have learned while helping him become a competent business owner and consultant. It’s even more rewarding because life has come full circle — my business partner is the grandson of the board member who mentored me 30 years ago.
