Dear New and Upcoming Leaders

I have been working in leadership for over 30 years, and I am passionate about helping new and upcoming leaders “win.”

Why?

I’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt!

I became a leader in earnest when I took on an Executive Director position at the age of 23. It was so easy to jump into it because I didn’t know what I didn’t know. As they say, ignorance is bliss. I soon came to realize it wasn’t going to be a cakewalk, and I was going to have to work hard to earn the trust and respect of the people around me. I clearly remember getting a call, about a year after starting,  from the board president asking, “are you sitting down because maybe you should.” Staff had gone to the board, claiming I wasn’t suitable for the job. However, the directors never doubted my ability and told the staff in no uncertain terms that I was their leader.  Their faith in me made me even more determined to succeed, and together, we led the organization through 15 years of growth and diversity.

The experience through those early years showed me that I am made of tougher stuff. I am stronger than I thought and even stubborn, but most importantly, I don’t give up on myself. However, it doesn’t hurt to have ten mentors cheering you on.

The world has changed a great deal since I left that position over 15 years ago and began consulting and training. Today, we don’t have the luxury of time to learn to lead and mentors are far and few between.  Long-term service is thought to be five years, but more likely two to three if you’re lucky. Gone are the days of grooming staff to take on these roles and new leaders are dropped into the deep end to either “sink or swim.” It’s not the fault of existing leaders who wished they had the time to support and train their willing staff; it is the result of our environment – no time, fewer mentors and greater urgency for skilled leaders.

Imagine what would happen if:

  • You had a mentor to support you in your journey. Someone you could turn to with questions, concerns, and fears knowing she is there to help and guide you toward success.
  • You were taught essential leadership skills and had an avenue to put them into practice while receiving growth-focused feedback.
  • You had fellow colleagues to talk to that are going through the same things you are, discovering what works and what doesn’t.
  • You were a confident, competent, capable, trusted, and respected leader!

Imagine me as your mentor, your ally, your support.

I can ignite the passion within, stoke the flames and watch you grow into a brilliant leader.

Together, we can make a world of difference.  Contact me and find out how.

Success will be yours,

Karin Naslund
